Actresses Milla Jovovich and Jameela Jamil share their abortion stories to decry Georgia law

Milla Jovovich is the latest actress to reveal that she had an abortion, while criticizing abortion bills in Georgia and other states.

The “Hellboy” and “Resident Evil” star wrote in an Instagram post on Tuesday that she underwent an “emergency abortion” two years ago, when she was filming on location in Eastern Europe and was 4½ months pregnant.

“I went into pre term labor and told that I had to be awake for the whole procedure,” she wrote. “It was one of the most horrific experiences I have ever gone through. I still have nightmares about it. I was alone and helpless.”

On Monday, “The Good Place” actress Jameela Jamil wrote on Twitter that she had an abortion when she was young, and “it was the best decision I have ever made.”

Thousands of people on both sides of the issue responded to the actresses’ posts.

Both actresses criticized the bill that Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed into law last week that will ban abortions if a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which can be as early as six weeks into pregnancy. The law is set to go into effect January 1, and the American Civil Liberties Union has said it will challenge it in court.

“This makes Georgia the sixth state to pass such a restrictive six-week abortion ban, joining Ohio, Mississippi, Kentucky, Iowa, and North Dakota,” Jovovich wrote.

“Abortion is hard enough for women on an emotional level without having to go through it in potentially unsafe and unsanitary conditions.”

Jamil called the Georgia law “upsetting.”

On May 8, the day the Georgia law was signed, actress and E! talk show host Busy Philipps wrote on Twitter, “I spoke about my abortion on my show tonight because I can not sit idly by while women’s rights are stripped away.”

On Tuesday night, the Alabama Senate passed the most restrictive abortion bill in the country. The legislation, which now goes to the governor’s desk, could punish doctors who perform abortions with life in prison.

In response Tuesday, Philipps wrote on Twitter, “1 in 4 women have had an abortion. Many people think they don’t know someone who has, but #youknowme.”

She encouraged other women who had abortions to use the #youknowme hashtag.
